Gentle Reminder

A myth is neither a lie nor an assertion, but it transforms and bends sense into a form, writes Roland Barthes, until nothing of the content remains. Strangely, and precisely because of this, myths can claim universal validity. All three artists in Gentle Reminder deal with different aspects of this: nations and other fictions that have real-life consequences for the lives of people, the longstanding assertions of patriarchy and power, or the insignia of extremist groups. Myths are depoliticised, but they are an instrument of power—and traces of their political use are everywhere.

Der Mythos ist weder Lüge noch Behauptung. Stattdessen, so schreibt Roland Barthes, biegt er den Sinn in eine Form, bis kein Inhalt mehr übrig bleibt. Seltsamerweise können Mythen trotzdem universelle Gültigkeit beanspruchen. Alle drei Künstler*innen in Gentle Reminder setzen sich mit verschiedenen Aspekten davon auseinander: mit Nationen und anderen Fiktionen, die reale Auswirkungen auf das Leben der Menschen haben, mit den alten Behauptungen von Patriarchat und Macht oder mit den Insignien extremistischer Gruppen. Mythen sind entpolitisiert, aber sie sind ein Instrument von Macht – und die Spuren ihrer politischen Nutzung sind deutlich zu sehen.
